This presentation will address current issues and trends in the transfer tax controversy arena at the audit, appeals, and litigation levels, including the valuation and transfer of interests in closely held entities, the use of formula clauses, GRAT planning, marital trust issues, and split-dollar life insurance.\n\nThe discussion will include the most significant developments of the last few years in these high-stakes, high-value tax controversies from a leading practitioner who has handled many of them, as well as strategies to mitigate risk before a controversy arises.\n\nSpeaker Bio\n\nJohn W. Porter is a senior partner with Baker Botts L.L.P. and has a nationwide practice representing taxpayers in sophisticated estate, gift, and income tax controversy matters, including audits, IRS appeals, and litigation. He has served as lead counsel for taxpayers in many significant published transfer tax decisions over the past 25 years.\n\nJohn is a Fellow of both the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and the American College of Tax Counsel. He is Board Certified in Estate Planning and Probate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and is a recipient of the AEPÂ® (Distinguished Accredited Estate PlannerÂ®) award from the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils.\n\nHe earned his J.D., cum laude, from Baylor School of Law and his B.B.A. in Accounting from Texas A&M University.
