Program Description and Benefits: 

Richard will reprise his presentation from the 50th Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning where he explained that lifetime QTIPs are increasingly the strategy of choice for exclusion use, while these versatile trusts also facilitate minority interest valuation savings, asset protection, gift tax valuation protection, sales to defective grantor trusts, and more.  He will provide creative ideas for specific uses of lifetime QTIPS and practical implementation guidance.  Richard will also explore the asset protection uses of lifetime QTIPs and post-divorce income tax implications that must be considered when establishing a lifetime QTIP.

Speaker Biography: 

Richard is a member of McArthur Franklin PLLC in Washington, DC.  He focuses on estate planning, trusts and estate administration, and beneficiary and fiduciary representation.  He is a member of the District of Columbia and Florida Bars, is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, is Group Vice-Chair of the ABA RPTE Section’s Income  and Transfer Tax Planning Group, and serves on the ACTEC Transfer Tax Study Committee.  He has spoken at numerous estate planning programs and written on estate planning topics for ACTEC Law Journal, Actionline, BNA Insights, Estate Planning, Journal of Multistate Taxation and Incentives, Probate & Property, Steve Leimberg’s Newsletters, Tax Notes, The Florida Bar Journal, The Washington Lawyer, Trusts & Estates and the BNA Estates, Gifts & Trust Journal.  Richard is a DC Super Lawyer and is ranked in the 2009 - 2015 editions of The Best Lawyers in America as a leading lawyer in the Trusts and Estates category.  Prior to joining Virginia McArthur and founding McArthur Franklin PLLC, Richard was a partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP.
